DOI: 10.1177/026461968900700105 Reading schemes for partially sighted beginning readersVisiting Teacher of the Visually Impaired, Birmingham There are many books and articles on the subject of young children learning to read, but little has been written that offers guidance in the choice of a reading scheme for partially sighted children. This paper has been produced after observing partially sighted children who are in mainstream education and use the same texts as their fully sighted peers. It is based on research made for a BPhil(Ed.) dissertation at the University of Birmingham. The writer believes that each primary school should provide a reading scheme which specifically meets the needs of partially sighted children as this would be appropriate for all beginning readers, whether partially sighted or not.
