Assessing the numeracy and literacy skills of visually impaired adults

Juliet M.V. Reid

This article reports on initial evaluations of some mainstream numeracy and literacy tests to determine how far they can be used in the vocational assessment of visually impaired adults. The criteria employed in the evaluation of each test and the rationale behind their selection are delineated. Results, showing the outcome of each evaluation on each criterion, are presented in tabular form and the relevance of their application to visually impaired people is discussed. Recommendations are made concerning the inclusion of individual mainstream test packages in a vocational assessment service for visually impaired adults.
