Help for disabled people

Barry Giles

Disabled Persons Services Manpower Services Commission, Sheffield

The shortage of jobs emphasises the importance of helping disadvantaged groups, including disabled people, to compete fairly and effectively. This article, based on a talk given at the half yearly meeting of the North Regional Association for the Blind, Sunderland, 24 March 1983, outlines briefly the range of help that is available through the Manpower Services Commission, both in terms of guidance and practical assistance, the changes currently being introduced aimed at providing a more flexible response to the individual needs of disabled people, and the new approach being taken to encourage employers to make the best use of disabled people.
